Arthritis research can be grouped into four major areas:
- Inflammation which occurs in joint diseases such as Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), axial spondyloarthritis and psoriatic arthritis, and in gout or arthritis which is triggered by an infection, e.g. Lyme Arthritis or rheumatic fever. Many inflammatory rheumatic diseases are caused by autoimmune reactions. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and psoriatic arthritis are autoimmune diseases, as are systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), scleroderma and the different forms of vasculitis
- Degenerative disorders of the spine and joints such as osteoarthritis
- Diseases of bone such as osteoporosis
- Soft-tissue diseases, such as fibromyalgia.

Our current scientific focus is on research which studies inflammation and autoimmune reactions, and degenerative processes as they occur in osteoarthritis. Projects examine the disease symptoms, in particular immune response in inflammation; the causes, in particular hereditary aspects; and search for improved treatments, prevention and cure.
