Why more research
Why more research?
Rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases are the most widespread group of health disorders in Switzerland. Yet they are poorly understood. There are no treatments which reliably stop the progressive destruction that rheumatic diseases often cause, let alone offer a cure to sufferers. For most people affected by them, the symptoms will be treated by the use of pain-killers, physiotherapy or surgical joint replacement.
People with musculoskeletal disorders are living with chronic pain, stiffness and reduced mobility. These symptoms often lead to further problems, such as fatigue, depression, absences from work and even job loss. Research can find ways to relieve the suffering of those affect by arthritis diseases.
The costs to society are also enormous. A Swiss federal government report estimates that in 2011 the health costs of musculoskeletal diseases in Switzerland was as high as 21 billion CHF, or around 3% of GDP.
Research is needed to understand the causes of musculoskeletal diseases and search for better treatment, cures and effective prevention. Your donation for our research gives people hope, that in the future they will be able to live without pain.
