Arthritis research can be grouped into five major areas:
- Inflammation which occurs in joint diseases such as Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), axial spondyloarthritis and psoriatic arthritis, and in gout or arthritis which is triggered by an infection, e.g. Lyme Arthritis or rheumatic fever.
- Autoimmune reactions relating to rheumatic diseases (or connective tissue diseases). Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), axial spondyloarthritis and psoriatic arthritis are autoimmune diseases, as are systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), scleroderma and the different forms of vasculitis
- Degenerative disorders of the spine and joints such as osteoarthritis
- Diseases of bone such as osteoporosis
- Conditions of pain such as low back pain and fibromyalgia
Our current scientific focus is on research which studies inflammation and autoimmune reactions, and degenerative processes as they occur in osteoarthritis.
